Abstract
En el trabajo se consideran las expediciones que se llevaron a cabo en el Pacífico norte del continente americano durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, tanto de carácter expansivo como científico. Particularmente consideramos el asentamiento español en Nutka (en la costa noroccidental de la actual isla de Vancouver), entre 1789 y 1795, los problemas de su creación, mantenimiento y abandono, además de las dificultades relacionadas con su explotación económica. Entre ellos, nos detenemos en los relacionados con la legalidad de los derechos de asentamiento y comercio, así como en las razones y consecuencias de su abandono. También se analiza el papel de Nutka en la pérdida de la hegemonía española en el Pacífico, como elemento central de la controversia con Inglaterra.
