Abstract
In view of the socioeconomic status and technological mutations of this last decades, of acceleration and mobility amplification, of the explosion of information technologies and communication (ITC), of inequalities increase and socio-spatial segregation phenomenon, as well as metropolization that have known the north american's big cities ; there are nowadays, two types of cities, which submit brand new issues for current societies. Thus, new solutions must emerge and they must make the link between several aspects that form the modern city, such as nature, mobility or even polycentricity.Thereby, there is need for a new vision of the urban design. While the model of the automotive city and its consequences on the environment and the society cannot stop being criticized by many authors, the important thing is not to work on this developing model of urban modernist post-war, but rather thinking the suburban areas’ becoming in order to make of these last living spaces more sustainable for tomorrow. The most important is learning from the mistakes made in the past, and moving forward by proposing better options for the future. Admittedly, those changes might go until population’s lifestyle gets better, but clearly, in view of the climatic changes’ circumstances, emergency weighs on those territories. So, local players, as development professionals, and evencitizens, must act today so that citizens has a better life tomorrow.This is in this particular context that updating is enrolled, in the sense that it allows an eventual stop, and starts questioning about the future of those suburban territories, in order to make of them more resilient facing environmental and climatic matters, but also demographic and socio-economic.Through this research paper, the thinking is focused on the municipality of Longueuil’s territory, which, despite weighty consequences that still appear on the functional urbanism, owns important natural resources and an undeniable potential speaking about updating.
