Si on a assisté, au cours des dernières années, à un regain d'intérêt envers les auxiliaires de justice, peu d'études se sont intéressées aux médecins qui remplissent ce rôle et parmi celles-ci, la plupart ont été consacrées aux coroners. Ce mémoire a pour objectif de pallier cette lacune par l'étude de la participation des médecins au système de justice criminelle de Québec et de leur influnce au sein de celui-ci, de 1880 à 1920. Il s'agit d'une période charnière durant laquelle la médecine légale est en ascension partout en Occident, mais occupe une place bien distincte dans l'appareil judiciaire en France et dans les pays anglo-américains. Puisque le Québec possède un système judiciaire hybride, qui allie le système judiciaire anglais au criminel et le système judiciaire français au civil, l'étude de l'expertise médicale nous y est apparue particulièrement féconde. Ce mémoire ceme donc la préparation donnée aux médecins ainsi que les tâches qui leur incombent, tantôt sur le terrain, tantôt au palais de justice. Il s'arrête également au statut que les gens de justice et les journalistes leur accordent à l'époque, en comparaison de celui des autres catégories de témoins. Enfin, cette étude met en lumière l'impact des médecins et de leurs preuves sur les jugements et les verdicts.
