Il campione faunistico analizzato, relativo a 5 orizzonti dello strato 1 della serie esterna di Grotta Paglicci, è costituito da 1764 elementi determinati, 646 dei quali rappresentati da Lagomorfi e Carnivori (36.6%). Le ossa sono state raccolte attraverso setacciatura da 2 mm nella vasta area antistante l’ingresso della grotta, il cosiddetto Riparo esterno. Lo scavo, eseguito nei mesi di maggio-giugno 2000, ha interessato lembi di sedimento compresi tra grossi blocchi di crollo. L’analisi della microfauna ha fornito un dato importante per la collocazione cronologica di questo strato. Sono stati rinvenuti resti di Microtus brecciensis (Sala, com. pers.), forma caratteristica di associazioni temperato-calde, mai segnalata all’interno dell’ultimo glaciale. Attraverso queste osservazioni, la fauna dello strato 1 esterno di Pagliacci può essere legata all’ultimo Interglaciale o ad una fase interstadiale del penultimo glaciale.
