Abstract
L'auteur étudie la période de démarrage de l'industrie du bois à pâte au Québec en cherchant à reconstituer sa chronologie. Un examen des séries statistiques disponibles l'amène à s'interesser aux données des forêts publiques, et plus particulièrement aux unités de mesure en vigueur dans cette industrie. Des modifications, en apparence anodines, aux règles de mesurage du bois à pâte, tel le passage de la corde de bois au pieds mesure de planche, seront mises en relief. Ces modifications révèlent, de la part de l'État québécois, une stratégie qui était passée inaperçue aux historiens jusqu'à maintenant: l'État favorise et impose finalement une transformation de la matière ligneuse sur place en accordant, en contrepartie, de généreuses mais discrètes réductions des redevances aux entrepreneurs.
