Abstract
친숙한 의미를 생성하는 환경은 오랫동안 신화의 영역, 즉 땅의 해석학적 근원으로 여기는 \n\n신화에 그 뿌리를 두어왔다. 신화는 의미 구성에 있어 중요한 역할을 하며, 이미 설정된 서술 구조에 의미 요소를 삽입시킨다. 신화는 하나의 정당화된 위대한 이야기다. 하지만, 성경 신화경우 영역(territory)을 의미 산출과 연결하는 장점을 가지는데, 이들은 최초의 인간 Adam이라는 이름으로 통합되어 나타난다. 이는 고대 민족주의자들에 의해 지지되었으며, 뿐만 아니라 근대 민족국가와 식민지 과정에서도 역시 이러한 신화적 기억과 영역에 의존한다. 우리는 여기서 민족 정체성은 영역(territory)뿐만 아니라 기억에 의해 확립된다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 민족성은, 영역적 한계 내에서 이루어지는 기억과 망각의 상호작용으로 이들은 이야기를 통해 강화된다. 반면, 포스트 모더니즘에서는 지식과 힘이 끊임없이 암호와 해독, 전위와 재배치, 균형과 불균형을 이루는데, 이들이 균형적 활동을 하기 위해서는 서로 상호적으로 기능을 하여 의미를 산출하여야 한다. 이때 의미는 최소한 이중적이어야 하며, 이를 통해 제 3의 의미 요소가 산출된다. 이것은 해석학적 위치를 필요로 하며, 19C와 20C 의 조국, 국가지위, 종교, 계급투쟁에 관한 정당화된 위대한 이야기(legitimization stories)의 중심을 이룬다. 포스트모더니즘의 관점에서 보면, 영역과 기원에서의 의미 분리는 기본적인 것으로, 이 과정은 새로운 의미를 생산하며, 정체성과 사회적 관계를 세계화의 맥락으로 재배치시킨다. 모더니즘 또한 영역으로부터 의미를 분리하는데, 이것은 원주민을 부정하기 위해 사용되었다. 모든 나라는 자연의 상태 혹은 투쟁의 상태에서 시작되어 좀 더 문명화된 상태로 발전해왔다. 하지만, 어떤 사회는 문명성을 획득하는 반면 그렇지 못한 사회도 존재하였다. 문제의 해결책은 기여 과정을 통하여 비합리적 제도로 사회를 레벨화하는 것이었다. 따라서 알려지지 않은 민족은 야만족으로 간주되었다. 그리하여, 초기 민족을 야만족으로 간주함으로써 땅과 원주민의 관계는 합리적으로 부정되었다. 이러한 방식으로 민족국가인 미국은 영역과 반향을 일으키는 그것의 의미를 분리하여 진보의 이원론적 개념을 만들어냈으며, 유사하게 모더니즘을 통해 민족국가들은 영역과 독립선포, 땅과 국체, 영역과 국가의 지위를 밀접하게 연결시켰다.
