Le vieillissement de la population est un phénomène mondial qui touche également les personnes ayant un trouble mental grave. Entre 2000 et 2050, la proportion de la population mondiale des personnes âgées de plus de 60 ans doublera. Donc, les personnes ayant un TMG seront directement touchées par la problématique du vieillissement. C’est pourquoi cette étude s’est attardée aux facteurs qui facilitent et qui nuisent au rétablissement des personnes âgées ayant un trouble mental grave (PATMG) : a) les facteurs individuels, b) les facteurs environnementaux et c) les facteurs liés aux politiques, aux programmes et à l’intervention. Cette recherche qualitative de type exploratoire a été effectuée dans le cadre de la maîtrise en travail social à l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Huit entrevues semi-dirigées ont été effectuées auprès de personnes âgées ayant un trouble mental grave des secteurs de Chicoutimi et Jonquière. Ces entrevues, enregistrées, puis retranscrites sous forme de verbatim ont ensuite été analysés à partir de l’approche bioécologique. Les résultats de cette étude mettent en évidence des facteurs individuels, environnementaux et liés à l’intervention qui ont un impact positif ou négatif sur le rétablissement des PATMG rencontrées. En ce qui concerne les facteurs individuels, le niveau d’espoir élevé des participants est un élément important de la recherche. Quant aux facteurs liés à l’environnement, la stabilité de ces différents facteurs (revenu, milieu de vie, etc.) est également un élément à retenir. Enfin, dans les facteurs liés à l’intervention, l’apport des différents services en santé mentale dans le processus de rétablissement est ressorti comme prioritaire par les participants.
