Le postmodernisme occupe le devant de la scène en ce qui concerne la littérature romanesque au Québec dans les années 1980. Seulement, ici, ce courant prend plutôt l'aspect d'une période historique péjorative, et ce, au profit d'une esthétique néo-réaliste qui émerge et fait véritablement partie d'une pratique de la lecture. Le néo-réalisme va même jusqu'à intégrer la notion de postmodernisme en précisant son rôle dans le champ littéraire. Grâce à une lecture critique sur le roman (chapitre 1), des concepts théoriques (chapitre 2) et une analyse d'un corpus québécois significatif (chapitre 3), on peut vérifier comment cette esthétique se manifeste et comment elle vient modifier la conception du roman dans les années 1980. En effet, si le néo-réalisme apparaît, c'est parce qu'il est possible de déceler un changement majeur par rapport à la mimésis romanesque, celle-ci se déplaçant de la vraisemblance à la mimésis fictive par le biais de trois mécanismes textuels (l'ambiguïté des quatre paradigmes, l'intertextualité et l'autoreprésentation). Par conséquent, on voit que se construit, en parallèle, deux niveaux de fiction: le niveau vraisemblable (Fiction 1) où la mimésis se développe et le niveau hyperfictif (Fiction 2) où la mimésis fictive prend place. Se forme par la suite une mise à distance entre ces deux Fictions puisqu'elles ne sont pas de même nature. Pourtant, on constate, à l'aide de l'analyse romanesque, que le roman québécois réussit à unir ces deux niveaux de fiction dans une harmonie singulière, à créer une nouvelle mimésis à partir de laquelle le néo-réalisme peut se déployer dans l'équilibre du réel et de l'imaginaire.
