Un survol diachronique de la production romanesque québécoise fait découvrir un espace littéraire foisonnant de personnages contradictoires ou divisés, de héros ambigus ou ambivalents, et de figures du double ; cet espace se construit ainsi en terrain fertile pour l’apparition du paradoxe. En effet, nombre de romans publiés pendant et après la Révolution tranquille manifestent un penchant évident pour l'emploi du paradoxe au niveau de la construction de l’univers fictionnel. Cette thèse analyse un corpus de romans québécois et rend compte du rôle que joue le paradoxe dans la construction de ces textes, du fonctionnement qu’il manifeste dans le monde fictionnel et des effets qu’il produit sur l’acte de lecture. Fondée sur l’observation que le paradoxe partage avec le texte littéraire la propriété de ne pas être pourvu d’existence en soi, mais de se construire dans le processus d’interprétation, cette démarche est tributaire des théories de la lecture. Nous travaillons avec une conception du paradoxe alimentée par la réflexion de Michel Riffaterre, Oswald Ducrot, W. V. O. Quine, Paul Watzlawick et Douglas Hofstadter, conception qui se concrétise dans une classification tripartite du paradoxe comprenant les paradoxes sémantiques, logiques et pragmatiques. De manière complémentaire, nous avons recours à la notion de personnage, qui permet l’accès à tous les niveaux du texte romanesque où le paradoxe est susceptible de se manifester, à savoir aux niveaux du ni discours (paradoxe sémantique), de la construction du monde fictif (paradoxe logique) et de la mise en lecture (paradoxe pragmatique).
