Abstract
Chicago's iconic Marina City could end up getting landmark protection status. The complex along the Chicago River was built in the 1960's and designed by Bertrand Goldberg. It includes the well-known corncob twin residential towers, a hotel, the House of Blues and the restaurant Dick's Last Resort. Crain's notes another Goldberg-designed building -- Prentice Women's Hospital in Streeterville -- was denied landmark status a couple years ago and torn down, despite preservation efforts , though Marina City doesn't face any similar risk. Property owners often fight against landmark status because it stops them from making changes to the buildings. If the Commission on Chicago Landmarks gives approval, Chicago's city council would then have the final say.
