Abstract
Infinite Snails explores the unique, fragile bonds that grow out of shared traumatic experiences, and many paths psychiatric survivors take to get back on stable ground. After meeting in a Scarborough psychiatric ward two years ago, Matt and Misa are hosting a destination wedding in Turks and Caicos. Dee, their former floormate, has been in love with Matt since the hospital, and drags her eccentric sister Tilley along to try and sabotage the wedding. Before Dee can tell Matt how she feels, she is thrust into the complexities of the wedding party – Misa’s Japanese Canadian family’s strained understanding of mental illness, Matt’s reoccurring depression and unwillingness to ask for help, and Tilley’s growing frustration with Dee’s fixation on love instead of recovery. The storyline switches between the week leading up to the wedding and flashbacks to the ward, showing the simultaneous growth and strain in their relationships.
