Abstract
The publication, which is being awarded the Macdonald prize, constitutes the second part of a diptych covering the period pertaining to the Seigneurie des Cent-Associés 1627-1663.Whereas the first volume was more a description of the major events of the period, the author now présents in this volume an indepth study concerning the social structure of the colony established on the shores of the St-Lawrence River.Marcel Trudel, through meticulous research, has brilliantly analysed the questions relating to the settlement of the colony and to the influence of behavior on social functions.Once again Marcel Trudel displayed his commanding knowledge of seventeenth century Canada.He consulted and rigorously utilized ail available sources, raised important questions and answered them with prudence and commonsense.As was the case for Marcel Trudel's previous books, the third volume of Histoire de la Nouvelle-France, is pleasant reading.Not only does this historian know how to structure a solid historical publication, but he also writes very well.The Sir John A. Macdonald Prize is an annual award for the finest work of Canadian History in English or French published over a twelve month period.The prize carries a cash award and a specially designed and minted medal bearing the effigy of Canada*s first prime minister.It is a joint présentation of the Canadian Historical Association and Manufacturera Life Insurance Company.
