Abstract
The “Bismarck” was built in 1871 by Alfred Stokes of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The wooden tug was first owned by Tyson & Robinson of Manistee, Michigan. They owned the vessel until 1884, when ownership transferred to Blanchard Navigation Co., of Detroit, MI. They subsequently renamed her “Justice Field” in 1984. In 1888, she was sold to Benjamin Boutell (Saginaw Bay Towing Co.), Bay City, MI. From 1889-1890, she was rebuilt in Bay City, MI, and in 1891, she was renamed “Traveller.” Her last U.S. enrollment was recorded at Port Huron, MI, on May 18, 1902. From 1902 until 1915, she was owned by Midland Towing & Wrecking Co., Ltd. (James Playfair, Mgr.), and was registered as Canadian vessel 111930 (“Traveller.") In 1915, she was purchased by Russell Timber Co., Ltd. of Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada. From 1916 until 1920, she was owned by Hugh Keefer, also of Port Arthur. In 1920, she was purchased by Lake Superior Paper Co., Ltd., Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and renamed “G.R. Gray.” The tug operated until 1943, when she was laid up at Sault Ste. Marie, and subsequently moved to Thessalon, Ont. In 1947, ownership transferred to J.F. McColman, of Thessalon, and she was abandoned at Thessalon boneyard that same year.
