Après un survol des théories classiques de la Nation, il présente les positions des marxistes et des penseurs fonctionnalistes américains sur la question nationale. Il expose la doctrine du droit international en matière d'accession à l'indépendance et de sécession. Il fait ensuite une brève histoire du nationalisme au Québec, dans ses variantes canadienne, canadienne-française et québécoise. En témoin engagé de l'actualité politique, Denis Monière n'hésite pas à conclure par un plaidoyer en faveur de la souveraineté du Québec. Ce livre clair et concis offre donc à la fois une présentation objective de la question nationale et une prise de position sujette à débat. Il intéressera tous ceux qui, aujourd'hui, à l'ère de la mondialisation, veulent comprendre le nationalisme, au Québec et ailleurs.
