Abstract
Kolnai Aurél neve talán már nem cseng teljesen ismeretlenül a magyar szellemi életben. Morálfilozófiai és politikai filozófiai munkái alapján ma már a 20. század egyik legeredetibb gondolkodójának ismerik el Nyugaton is. Angol nyelven készült emlékirata csak 1999-ben jelent meg először. A magyar kiadás bővebb, tartalmazza Kolnainak az 1956-os forradalomról írt tanulmányát is.Élete ahogy mondani szokás kész regény: fiatalon a Galilei-kör tagja, 1920-ban Bécsbe emigrál, ott tanul filozófiát, s kötelezi el magát a husserli fenomenológiai módszer mellett, amelyet sikeresen ötvöz később az angolszász analitikus szemlélettel. Néhány évig a pszichoanalitikus iskolának is tagja, de a húszas évek közepén már bírálója. Bécsben katolizál. A náci ideológiáról írt műve Nyugaton is nevet szerez neki. 1937-től Párizsban él. A német támadáskor internálják. Kalandos úton jut el Amerikába. Konzervatív fordulata ott kiteljesedik. Néhány évvel később Kanadában, a quebeci Laval Egyetemen kap állást, de nem találja helyét a doktriner tomista légkörben. Mélységesen érdeklődik a spanyol politikai változások iránt, de végül mégsem Madridban, hanem Londonban telepszik le, és az angol filozófiai közélet kissé különc, de jól ismert és sokra becsült tagjává válik. 1973-ban hunyt el. Emlékirata csak az ötvenes évek középéig kíséri el az Olvasót. Eredeti véleményei, kitekintése, műveltsége, ismeretségei s nem utolsósorban stílusa egyszerre teszik elgondolkodtató, izgalmas és szórakoztató olvasmánnyá.Az 1956-os forradalomról szóló tanulmány Palotai Borbála fordítása.
