ABSTRACT: There is a consensus among the scientific community when it comes to fighting climate change: the future needs to be electrified and the grid needs to be powered by clean energy. However, clean energy often means intermittent renewable energy, and its integration into the grid comes with a few operational challenges. An equilibrium between the power supply and the demand has to be maintained at all times, and historically, the supply has been following the demand even if it has been spiking daily. It is worth reversing the perspective: what if the demand can be flexible and adapt to the supply according to the resources' availability? Given the stochastic nature of the supply and demand, one can only achieve such a paradigm with a means of storage allowing to achieve the energy transfer when the supply and demand are asynchronous and to act as a buffer to account for prediction uncertainties. Since the built environment is one of the main energy consumers, this thesis focuses mainly on demand-side strategies, especially load shifting, applied to Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings (GEBs). By leveraging the thermal mass already inside commercial buildings, it becomes possible to adapt to the needs of the grid without additional financial investments. To ensure thermal comfort and energy efficiency, the optimization scheme is based on a thermal inertia prediction model using machine learning techniques in Python. Using historical data of buildings, a dedicated optimal control-based algorithm is able to send commands to the electromechanical components of a building to optimize its load profile to suit the grid's needs. This thesis shows the results of different simulations performed for an institutional building located in Montréal during a winter season, using the TRNSYS modelling software paired with a Python script acting as the controller. The co-simulation between TRNSYS and Python is enabled by a new TRNSYS component that was created as part of this work. These different case studies shed light on the pros and cons from an environmental, economic, and operational point of view of a dual-energy system and a purely electrical system. The results show that the dual-energy system is the one with the overall best flexibility score; it can achieve shifting of the entire load during a peak event without disturbing the occupants' thermal comfort and is the most viable financial option. However, on the other hand, this scenario generates at least 6 times more CO2 than the fully electrical reference scenario.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
