ABSTRACT: The decarbonization of industry, including transportation, is necessary and must be implemented in order to reach the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. One of the processes allowing the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is biorefinery. This process, using various sources of biomass as raw material, in this case forest residues, allows the production of different biomaterials, biofuels or biochemical products, depending on the technological pathway used. In recent years, several biorefinery technological routes have been developed with a product portfolio that varies from one route to another. The implementation of these processes leads to many uncertainties related to different factors such as scale-up, yield or presence of political regulations. Industries need a decision-making system to evaluate and determine the conditions for their deployment. In particular, multi-criteria decision support tools are the most appropriate means to conduct the analysis, evaluation and comparison of these technology pathways. In addition, access to a multidisciplinary database and criteria can help stakeholders (technology developers and providers, investors, governments, regulatory agencies, research organizations, local communities, indigenous people, etc.) make informed decisions, especially at an early stage of design. This issue raises several research questions, such as whether it is really possible to distinguish between different variants of the same technology pathway, and what categories of decision criteria would be relevant to conclude on the cost-effectiveness of a project and the evaluation of existing technology pathways? Furthermore, is there a decision support tool that can facilitate these tasks, while providing access to the necessary technical, economic, and environmental information (mass and energy balances, biobased product yields, cost estimates, environmental impacts, etc.), as well as multidisciplinary criteria to facilitate the sorting process? The main objective of this thesis was to select a decision support tool (DST) that would allow for a comprehensive evaluation of multiple technology paths and to systematically and critically analyze whether the triage process performed with its help is accelerated and informed, following the completion of the case studies. The decision support tool chosen was I-BIOREF, developed by CanmetENERGY at Varennes at Natural Resources Canada. Following a critical analysis of the different DSTs currently available, I-BIOREF emerged as the one with the most recent data on existing biorefinery technology pathways, while providing the user access to a variety of criteria, complete technical and economic analyses, as well as sensitivity and scenario analyses. To analyze its use for technology pathway evaluation and the usability of the tool for the needs of biorefinery specialists, a methodology was developed.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
