Au cours des dernières années, le CNRC a mené des projets de recherche en collaboration avec l'ASHRAE et d'autres organismes nord-américains pour se pencher sur les problèmes relatifs à la gestion de la fumée dans les bâtiments. La recherche inclut des projets ayant pour but d'étudier l'efficacité des systèmes d'évacuation de la fumée dans les atriums, l'extinction de feux par gicleurs dans les centres commerciaux, et l'efficacité des détecteurs de fumée dans les conduits des systèmes de chauffage, ventilation et conditionnement d'air (CVCA). Les projets en cours comprennent des études sur les incendies touchant des câbles de télécommunications dans les plenums de reprise d'air et l'evaluation des corrélations des panaches de fumée sous les balcons, utilisées pour la conception de systèmes de gestion de la fumée dans les atriums. Ce document offre un aperçu des recherches menées récemment par le CNRC et qui sont en cours sur la gestions de la fumée, et aborde l'orientation des recherches futures.
