Abstract
De 1632 à 1659, des Français s’établissent dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent. D'après la charte de la Compagnie de la Nouvelle-France, ils sont obligatoirement de foi catholique. Parmi eux, on compte un nombre relativement considérable de clercs, de religieux et de religieuses appartenant à diverses communautés et dont le but est d’évangéliser les Indiens et de desservir la population française. D'où ces communautés tirent-elles en définitive leur pouvoir de juridiction? Tenter de répondre à cette question en y apportant les nuances voulues, c’est en même temps s’efforcer de reconstituer les premières structures religieuses de la colonie qui constituent un point de départ essentiel - quoique traditionnellement négligé - dans l'étude de l'Église en Nouvelle-France. Établir les cadres religieux élémentaires des années 1632-1659, pour mieux apprécier l'oeuvre de Mgr de Laval et de ses successeurs : tel est le but que nous avons poursuivi dans ce travail .
