Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

During the following years the Bering Sea became the scene of extensive sealing and whaling activity and the general character of the broad shelf joining Siberia and Alaska south of the Chukotski and Seward Peninsulas was soon defined. However, at the close of the 19th century the northern extent of the Chukchi Shelf was still unknown. In 1879 U. S. Navy Commander DeLong set out in his ill-fated ship the JEANNETTE in search of new lands thought by many to lie north of Siberia as an extension -of the Chukchi Shelf and Wrangel Land. The JEANNETTE was beset in the ice at 71 °35'N., 175 0 °06' w. and drifted with the pack for nearly 2 years before finally being crushed and sunk at 77°15'N., 154°59'E.This drift demonstrated that Wrangel Land, now Wrangel Island, was not contiguous with Greenland as suggested by the German geographer Petermann and his supporters.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
