Abstract
It has been suggested that the localisation of food production and consumption, coupled with the shortening of food supply chains, offers the prospect of enhanced profitability for food producers-particularly those farms wishing an alternative to the industrial model of agriculture. In 2004, the Old Order Mennonite community of Waterloo Region, Ontario, established Canada's first produce auction: the Elmira Produce Auction Co-operative (EPAC), an innovative short food supply chain (SFSC). More specifically, this thesis reports on the factors associated with the establishment of the EPAC and examines its role as a local food venture, while also identifying both initial motivations and resulting farm-level changes amongst participating Old Order Mennonite producers. Research indicates that the collective wholesale marketing of produce has prompted both material and social changes at the farm-household scale.
