Tässä raportissa esitetään vuosien 1962-2001 aikana maataloushallituksessa, vesi- ja ympäristöhallituksessa ja nykyisessä Suomen ympäristökeskuksessa kerätyn laajan maaperänäyteaineiston laboratoriomääritysten tulokset. Raportin tavoitteena oli saada julkaistavaan muotoon ja yleishyödylliseen käyttöön tuo pitkältä aikaväliltä oleva laaja aineisto, jota ei ole aikaisemmin julkaistu. Ympäri Suomea kerätyt näytteet on otettu maasta 0-60 m syvyydeltä enimmäkseen maaperätutkimusten tai kuivatus- ja pengerrystöiden yhteydessä. Alkuperäisestä, lähes 20 000 näytteen aineistosta on otettu tähän julkaisuun mukaan 10 297 näytettä. Geoteknisen maalajiluokituksen mukaan luokiteltuna julkaisussa käsitellään yhteensä 29 maalajia, joka sisältää sekä eloperäisiä, hieno- ja karkearakeisia että moreenimaalajeja. Julkaisussa esitetään eri maalajien tilavuuspainon, tiheyden, hienousluvun, juoksu- ja kieritysrajan, plastisuusluvun, sensitiivisyyden ja vesipitoisuuden jakautuminen, keskiarvo ja mediaani. Vedenläpäisevyydestä ja leikkauslujuudesta on tutkittu maalajien jakautumista. Lisäksi selvitetään, miten eri ominaisuudet korreloivat keskenään. Maaperänäytteiden laboratoriomääritysten tuloksista käsitellyt tulokset osoittavat, että näytteiden ominaisuuksien arvot edustavat hyvin Suomen maaperän ominaisuuksia.
