The Stressors Experienced by International Students and Coping Strategies

Abstract
This study investigates the stressors faced by international students in Canadian post-secondary institutes and the coping mechanisms they use to manage these challenges. Quantitative data was collected from 29 participants through an anonymous online survey. The research highlights key stressors, including academic pressure, financial difficulties, racism, language barriers, cultural adjustment, and social isolation. To cope with these challenges, students reported engaging in activities such as pursuing hobbies, seeking social support, participating in physical activities, and practicing mindfulness. Social networks, including fellow international students, Canadian classmates, and religious institutions, played an integral role in offering support. However, access to mental health resources remains limited, with a majority of students unaware of campus services due to systemic barriers and insufficient awareness. This research calls for academic institutions to address these gaps by implementing targeted mental health literacy programs, improving accessibility to resources, and fostering inclusive environments.
