Abstract
"Turret Chief" was built in England in 1896 for trading in the Suez Canal. There were three other boats like it on the lakes: "Turret Cape," "Turret Crown," and "Turret Court." All of them were built by the English and had the same dimensions. They were operated by the Canadian Lake and Ocean Navigation Co. of Montreal, Quebec. "Turret Chief" was later stranded on Lake Huron in 1913. It was then later recovered and converted into the Canadian grain carrier "Jolly Inez," which ran off of Saddlebag Island (six miles west of Detour, Michigan), in 1927. One day, while at sea, great big holes were torn in its hull. The grain carrier began to tear apart, and thus, it was directed hard aground. Without time to pick up food or clothing, the crew drew lines over the side and abandoned the ship. Making a shelter of boughs and driftwood, the twenty seamen hudled together without food or fire from Saturday night to Monday morning. They were discovered by a file of Native Americans walking through the snow. Thus, they were rescued and, later that day, were drinking hot coffee around a hot stove at Copper Harbor.
