Abstract
This article focuses on the content of a manuscript of a miscellaneous nature until now largely unstudied by scholars of Spanish literature. The manuscript is a multilingual codex, probably prepared around the middle of the seventeenth century in the Catalan linguistic area. It includes nearly two hundred poems of various genres (romances, sonnets, décimas, songs, etc.), some theatrical and paratheatrical texts (plays, prologues, and chacona dances), and a few texts in prose. Most of these texts belong to the final quarter of the sixteenth century, although the codex also includes texts from the first half of this century and from the first decades of the following century. The list of authors linked to several of these compositions includes names such as the Argensola brothers, Lope de Vega, Luis de Góngora, Fernando de Herrera, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, Francisco Agustín de Tárrega, Gaspar Aguilar, the Sevillian playwright Cepeda or Miguel Beneyto, among others. The presence of satirical, burlesque, and erotic poems is also noteworthy. In the first section of this article, I describe the codex and its most relevant material traits, and I analyze the most significant aspects of the texts it includes. Around fifty texts seem to be hitherto uknown. Among the rest we find known texts with unique variants, which in some cases improve the known text, or which were only found in a single source. In the second part of the article, I offer a catalogue of the codex’s content.
