O aumento inexorável da população idosa requer que o estudo das questões inerentes ao envelhecimento, em que pontua a violência, seja uma prioridade nas mais diversas áreas de cuidados às pessoas idosas. Constatou-se que a definição de violência e maus tratos a pessoas idosas maioritariamente adotada foi a assumida na Declaração de Toronto, assinada pelos países membros da ONU, em 2002. Não obstante a produção científica publicada, parece certo que não plasma, de todo, a realidade. De entre as preocupações atuais, sobressai a violência sobre as pessoas idosas, no entanto, pode manifestar-se de forma mais ou menos explícita, com contornos, por vezes, pouco realistas, consequência da dificuldade em encontrar uma matriz concetual.
