Abstract
Caption provided reads: "Walnut Cove Overlook Closed. This image was taken in 2005 as a significant development was undertaken in the Walnut Cove valley under the Parkway south of Asheville. J. Scott Graham was an advocacy photographer who was always trying to highlight the encroaching development on the Parkway. He challenged me one day: 'Houck, why doesn't the Foundation speak out more about this issue?' I took this comment as a challenge and made a sign as depicted. I screwed the sign with connecting posts to the Parkway sign in the overlook. Two visitors had pulled into the overlook to pose with the sign. The Foundation was not created as an advocacy organization, and I expected to 'get in trouble' for having this sign and message promoted. The sign was only temporary, and several park managers had seen it in a photograph that I shared. But no one ever said a word." Caption sourced from metadata embedded by Medford in 2024.
