Abstract
В статье рассматривается связь между модой, временем, глобальным опытом современности и сложностью транснациональных отношений в контексте визуальной культуры США и Бразилии начала XX века. В ее фокусе находится набор негативов со стеклянных пластин, на которых запечатлены рабочие, мигранты из разных стран, помогавшие строить железную дорогу Мадейра—Маморе в глубине амазонских джунглей в период с 1907 по 1912 год. Они были сняты нью-йоркским модным фотографом Даной Б. Мериллом, и щелчок затвора его камеры знаменовал собой буквальную паузу в рабочем дне. Мерилл подробно документировал изношенные и потертые комбинезоны, хлопчатобумажные рубашки, функциональные брюки и утилитарные куртки, между которыми попадались разнообразные национальные детали, будь то балканский жилет или индийский тюрбан, проливающие свет на географические коммуникации индустриального модерна. Прозванная «железной дорогой дьявола» из-за огромного количества рабочих, погибших во время ее строительства от несчастных случаев и болезней, линия Мадейра—Маморе была американо-бразильским предприятием, призванным ускорить глобальный экспорт каучука и других тропических товаров из Боливии, не имевшей прямого выхода к морским путям.
