Abstract
The idea of spirituality is increas-ingly being used in the context of adult education. This paper will tentatively explore some of the implications of an emergent spiri-tuality within the practice of adult education. It begins by situating our understanding of spirituality in an historical context. This is followed by a brief historical overview of the relationship between spirituality, social change, and the practice of adult education. Building on this brief historical analysis, our under-standing of an emergent spirituality is argued to be a property of the evolution of human consciousness. The implications of an emergent spirituality for the practice of adult education are then examined. RÉSUMÉ L’idée de spiritualité est utilisée de plus en plus dans le contexte de l’éducation des adultes. Cet article tentera d’explorer quelques-unes des implications d’une spiritualité émergente à l’intérieur de la pra-tique de l’éducation des adultes. D’abord, l’auteur situe notre com-préhension de spiritualité dans un contexte historique. Ensuite se trouve un bref aperçu historique de la relation entre la spiritualité, le changement social, et la pratique de l’éducation des adultes. En bâtissant sur cette brève analyse historique, il est avancé que notre compréhension de la spiritualité émergente est une caractéristique de l’évolution de la conscience humaine. Par la suite, l’auteur examine les implications d’une spiri-tualité émergente pour la pratique de l’éducation des adultes.
