Dans les pays d'Amérique “Latine”, avoir un phénotype qui, dans l'imaginaire collectif, se rapproche de celui des européens, constitue un avantage important et recherché. Dans une famille de métis-blancs colombiens, et sans méconnaître la multiplicité des facteurs confluant dans le choix du conjoint, beaucoup d'alliances matrimoniales ont été motivées et stimulées par un « projet de blanchissement et d'ascension sociale ». Si du côté du métis ce projet permet d'accroître l'auto-estime, du côté du “blanc” il est susceptible d'améliorer les conditions objectives d'existence. La présente communication explore une construction identitaire à la lumière de l'influence de l'hégémonie occidentale et masculine. Le paradigme de la transaction sociale et les concepts de stigmate et de la représentation de soi de Goffman sont utilisés comme analyseurs.
