Le site archéologique de Briga se trouve dans le Nord de la France, aux confins de la Normandie et de la Picardie, sur les hauteurs de la ville de Eu (lieu-dit « Le Bois l’Abbé », 76). Les ruines mises au jour depuis près de deux siècles correspondent aux vestiges d’une importante agglomération, dont le nom antique est attesté par l’épigraphie. Actuellement reconnue sur une superficie d’une soixantaine d’hectares, elle comprend des édifices publics (sanctuaires, thermes, théâtre et basilique) et privés (habitat), dont la période d’occupation continue couvre la fin de l’âge du fer et tout le Haut-Empire. Briga fait l’objet depuis une vingtaine d’années d’un nouveau programme de recherche et les fouilles ont livré, depuis la fin du XXème siècle, une abondante quantité de documentations et d’artefacts. Le mobilier le plus abondant, la céramique, dont le volume avoisine 500 000 tessons, constitue une fabuleuse source d’informations. Cette thèse présente les résultats de près de dix années de travail consacrées à l’étude céramologique de ce matériel de choix. La méthode mise en œuvre associe les descriptions macroscopiques, pétrographiques et typologiques des productions identifiées, et a permis de réaliser un Dictionnaire des céramiques de Briga. Le corpus ne trouve pas d’équivalent ailleurs que dans les chefs-lieux de cités environnants, dont les plus proches sont Samarobriva (Amiens), Caesaromagus (Beauvais), Iuliobona (Lillebonne) et Rotomagus (Rouen).La thèse présente des données en grande partie inédites, qui apportent un éclairage nouveau sur les productions céramiques et sur leur évolution au cours du Haut-Empire mais surtout sur des caractéristiques culturelles, l’évolution de l’approvisionnement et donc des échanges et du commerce dans cette région de Gaule du Nord.
