Abstract
Vaccinaties vormen een bijzonder succesvol hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van de geneeskunde.Sinds de eerste experimenten van Jenner in de late 18 e eeuw met koepokken werden met behulp van vaccinaties verschillende ernstige infectieziekten terug gedrongen.In 1980 werd de wereld zelfs officieel pokken vrij verklaard.Die was mede mogelijk omdat vaccinatie als techniek het unieke voordeel heeft dat ook niet-gevaccineerden mee beschermd worden, omdat de kiem, dankzij vaccinatie, minder voorkomt in de omgeving, het zogenaamde kudde-effect.In het verleden was vaccinatie meestal veilig, efficint en goedkoop en de reeks infectieziekten waarvoor routinematig gevaccineerd wordt heeft zich in de afgelopen decennia sterk uitgebreid.Daarom werden er in het verleden zelden vragen gesteld bij de invoering van een veralgemeende vaccinatie: als het werkte dan moest het ook gebeuren.
