Voor menig geschiedenisdocent was het even wennen aan het begin van dit schooljaar. In augustus 2007 ging het nieuwe examenprogramma geschiedenis voor havo en vwo van start. Voorheen lag het accent in de geschiedenislessen in de bovenbouw op de Moderne Tijd. Nu moest men de leerlingen een overzicht van de gehele geschiedenis bijbrengen, te beginnen bij de prehistorie. Het doel van dit alles? Het aanbrengen van een historisch referentiekader (ook wel oriëntatiekennis genoemd) bij de leerlingen. Maar zijn de nieuwe geschiedenismethodes wel echt gericht op het aanbrengen van oriëntatiekennis? Of is dit slechts een mooi politiek ideaal? Om deze vraag te kunnen beantwoorden hebben vier historici gekeken hoe en of oriëntatiekennis wordt bevorderd in de nieuwe geschiedenismethodes Feniks, Memo en Geschiedenis Werkplaats.
