Este trabajo, preparado pocos meses después de la visita a Cuba del Papa, fue presentado en la Conferencia Anual Montreal’98, de la Sociedad para el Estudio Científico de la Religión. En él se aborda dicha estancia desde la perspectiva del estudio de las transformaciones del espacio social de la religión en la sociedad cubana. Por supuesto, para una mejor comprensión de las modificaciones que tanto en el campo religioso como en su conexión con la sociedad más amplia han tenido lugar en las últimas décadas, se hace necesario tomar en cuenta el propio proceso de cambio ocurrido en la sociedad y en la cultura nacional. En el trabajo se analiza la incidencia en la reconformación del espacio social de la religión que tuvo la visita del jefe de la Iglesia Católica a través de sus implicaciones directas, así como del análisis de las principales dicotomías implícitas en el discurso de Juan Pablo II durante aquellos días.
