Abstract
Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911�1980), one of the most influential thinkers\nin the history of the media, grew up in the Canadian prairies. The relationship\nwith his parents was different with each of them: friendly with Herbert and\nintense with Elsie, who was the undisputable protagonist of Marshall�s life until\nCorinne Keller Lewis appeared and became his wife and mother of his six\nchildren. His technological optimism, focused on inspiration and perception,\nirritated a section of the academic community who failed to understand the\nhidden meaning of his aphorisms. For the rest, he was a prophet. He trained\nhis thinking with Thomas Nashe�s thoughts and it was later that he became\nsuccessful in the media with well-known titles such as The Medium is the Massage,\nUnderstanding Media: The Extensions of Man or War and Peace in the Global\nVillage. Having become an institution in Communication departments in\nNorth America, he died in his sleep in the early hours of December 31st, after\nhaving suffered serious health problems in the last years of his life.
