Abstract
Despite rapid development of wave and tidal marine \nrenewable energy (MRE) devices, little is known of the \nenvironmental and ecological effects of installing and \noperating individual devices or arrays. \nThe FLOWBEC project is investigating these effects at wave \nand tidal energy test sites in Orkney (EMEC). An upwardfacing sonar platform was developed to monitor the \nenvironment around MRE devices as a tool to guide marine \nspatial planning, device design, licensing and operation. \nThe platform is self-contained, portable between sites, \ndeployed in 20-minutes at slack tide and captures a full \ntidal cycle over 14 day deployments.
