Pour saisir l’intérêt qui est porté aux inégalités de genre dans l’éducation, il convient de se rappeler que l’éducation sous forme scolaire puis universitaire s’est adressée aux hommes bien avant de s’adresser aux femmes et que les enseignements ont longtemps différés selon le sexe. Cependant, si davantage de garçons que de filles sont encore scolarisés dans certains pays, tel n’est plus le cas dans les pays occidentaux. Dans ces derniers, les filles sont progressivement devenues plus nombreuses que les garçons à fréquenter l’école secondaire et tendent davantage à poursuivre vers des études supérieures que les garçons. Dès lors, dans quelle mesure aurions-nous atteint l’égalité hommes-femmes dans l’enseignement supérieur ? Pour répondre à cette question, nous nous intéressons aux parcours des étudiants québécois au cours des 40 dernières années. Nous voyons ainsi que depuis le début des années 1980, les étudiantes sont progressivement devenues plus nombreuses que les étudiants et que leur réussite tend à être également meilleure. Nous ouvrons alors une discussion sur des facteurs susceptibles de contribuer à expliquer ce phénomène.
