Al decennia lang wordt in het griepseizoen een verhoogde mortaliteit ten gevolge van ischemische hartaandoeningen waargenomen.1 De samenhang tussen een recente influenza-infectie en ischemische cardiale events werd bevestigd in een analyse van 364 ziekenhuisopnames ten gevolge van een acuut myocardinfarct in Canada.2 In de zeven dagen na een bewezen influenza-infectie was er een zes maal verhoogde kans op opname vanwege een myocardinfarct.
