Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The objective of this research was to explore some factors that may be responsible for the development of belly-nosing behaviour in early-weaned piglets. In two experiments, the relationships between dietary factors and belly-nosing, and the relationships between social stress and belly-nosing, were investigated. The establishment of feeding and the presence of milk in the diet had no effect on belly-nosing behaviour, suggesting this behaviour is not associated with feeding motivation. Although altering the social environment resulted in elevated plasma cortisol, increased variation in neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio, and increased aggression there was no corresponding increase in belly-nosing, which suggests that belly-nosing is not a general indicator of stress. Oral-nasal behaviour (piglet-directed nosing, pen-directed nosing, belly-nosing) was performed more frequently by lower weight-for-age piglets, suggesting a greater need for tactile stimulation in piglets that are less physiologically mature.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
