Abstract
This thesis is an examination of the attitudes of Canadian farmers towards recent Dutch immigrants in a Southwestern Ontario farming community from a social psychological perspective, using social identity theory. The negative attitude shown towards recent Dutch immigrants stems from a rejection of their particular style of dairy farming. This hostility emerges out of social competition for a positively distinct social identity and not as a result of some objective conflict of economic interests. This dogmatic adherence to a more traditional style of dairy farming by Canadian farmers may prove to be detrimental to the future survival of Canadians in the dairy farming industry.
