En este artículo se analiza el significado del color en la obra de Carlos Raúl Villanueva, centrándose en su obra más relevante: la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas y la inf luencia que tuvo en obras posteriores como el Pabellón de la Exposición de Montreal 1967. La investigación profundiza en las fuentes y funciones de los colores en una arquitectura como espacio temporal. Permitirá apoyar la hipótesis de que el color, en Villanueva, es base de una arquitectura entendida como acto social que anuncia valores significativos e idiosincráticos de su país. Lo cromático, en su obra, es un componente arquitectónico que aporta expresividad a lo tectónico fomentando un continuum espacial. Villanueva crea una concepción arquitectónica intuitiva en la cual la globalidad cromática de los colores de los artistas invitados a participar con él en el hecho arquitectónico hacen comprensibles la lectura de la singular espacialidad de su obra. En sus planos proyectuales y constructivos se sitúan y acotan escalas y proporciones de las obras artísticas en constelaciones que estimulan en los recorridos la experiencia espaciotemporal. En el espacio se unen el resto de las artes integrándose a través del color en síntesis bajo el marco de la arquitectura.
