Abstract
Across the UK, Europe, USA and Canada, women account for nearly half of the general workforce and around one-third of all cross-sector management positions. In the private security sector, however, they account for only around one in five of the general workforce and less than one in ten managers. Using responses obtained during semi-structured telephone interviews with eight female and six male senior security practitioners based in the UK, this study examines why there is a lack of senior women security practitioners, whether it would be beneficial for business to have more, and how it can be addressed. \nIt revealed that, although women are indeed making inroads and helping security to be an enabler of business, more work is required to ensure the gendered mix of the private security industry reflects the society in which it operates, and realises the rewards that such a mix will bring.
