Abstract
Ce volume réunit les actes d’un colloque international organisé à Montréal en 2010. Il part d’une interrogation, et ouvre un champ d’investigation : après avoir connu une sorte d'apogée à la fin des Lumières, autour de figures comme Delille, Erasmus Darwin ou Goethe, la « poésie scientifique » a-t-elle disparu avec le romantisme, qui, selon Sainte-Beuve, consomma la déroute de la poésie didactique et descriptive ? A-t-elle au contraire survécu, comme le suggère l'analyse quantitative des données éditoriales françaises, jusqu’en 1900 ? En ce cas, que faire des œuvres qui ont cherché, après cette date, à réinventer les modalités d’un dialogue entre poème et sciences, quitte à tourner le dos à toute tradition antérieure ? Peut-on encore parler d’un même « genre » ? Enfin le destin de cette poésie fut-il identique en France et dans d’autres pays européens ? Ce sont les pièces de cette enquête en cours, poursuivie selon d’autres voies par l’anthologie Muses et Ptérodactyles (Seuil, 2013), qui sont versées ici au dossier, avec 26 contributions synthétiques, monographiques ou théoriques, couvrant plusieurs siècles et plusieurs langues, du 18e siècle à nos jours.
