Prenant comme point de départ la prémisse selon laquelle l'identité est une construction sociale, produit d'une interpellation idéologique, nous ferons l'analyse sociologique du parcours subversif de Flora Tristan dans les Pérégrinations d'une paria. En premier lieu, nous nous attarderons au seuil autobiographique du récit dans lequel la femme expose les facteurs qui ont contribué à la construction de son identité de paria. Outre la dénonciation de la doxa que l'on y retrouve, cette entrée en matière nous permettra de circonscrire l'objectif qui sous-tend l'écriture du récit de voyage. Portant d'abord notre attention sur les éléments favorisant la reconnaissance idéologique d'un sujet, nous étudierons ensuite la démarche de la narratrice en terre étrangère et sa quête d'une position dans l'espace social. La lecture qui sera faite des différents chapitres rassemblés dans les deux tomes des Pérégrinations reposera principalement sur l'évolution du point de vue exploité par la narratrice et l'effet-idéologie qui s'y rattache. Critique de la société péruvienne et des dirigeants du pays, le récit sert également de prétexte à l'auto-analyse. En ce sens, nous tenterons de démontrer comment le regard de la narratrice et les commentaires évaluatifs qui en découlent engendrent une définition nouvelle de son identité. Basée sur le modèle de l'héroïne romantique, cette redéfinition de soi entraîne une volonté d'entrer en action et d'agir sur les fondements de la société. Enfin, pour clore cette recherche, nous concentrerons notre attention sur le caractère subversif du discours exposé dans les derniers chapitres du récit. Cette analyse nous permettra de comprendre comment la subversion de l'ordre social permet à la narratrice de transcender l'état de paria auquel elle s'identifie. Nous verrons ainsi comment, par le biais de l'observation et de l'introspection, un « Je » peut opérer une transformation identitaire par la mise en place d'un discours hérétique.
