Abstract
This article reviews what we know to date about political polarization in Spain. First, it focuses on the increasing ideological polarization, which has occurred more at the ideological and identity levels than on practical issues related to specific policies. Second, it focuses on the evolution of affective polarization in the last quarter of a century, with its ups and downs and differentiated stages. Third, it lists the main risks related to polarization, especially political locking and the cost that this entails. Finally, it reviews some recent proposals to reduce the climate of political polarization, both in terms of institutional or political reforms, and in the field of social relations.
