Le développement significatif des régimes d'options d'achat d'actions au cours des dernières années s'est accompagné d'une controverse sur l'efficacité de cet instrument. Certains avancent que les régimes d'options d'achat d'actions favorisent le détournement de la richesse des actionnaires vers les dirigeants des entreprises, alors que, théoriquement, les régimes d'options d'achat d'actions devraient aligner les intérêts des dirigeants avec ceux des actionnaires, et par conséquent maximiser la richesse de ces derniers. Malgré cette popularité et cette controverse, peu d'études récentes ont examiné la perception des investisseurs quant à la rémunération des dirigeants en options d'achat d'actions (OAA). Cette étude est réalisée dans un contexte canadien. Elle a pour objectif d'examiner l'effet d'annonce d'octrois d'options d'achat d'actions aux dirigeants d'entreprise sur la perception des investisseurs. En particulier, cette recherche évalue la réaction du marché boursier suite à l'octroi des OAA aux dirigeants d'entreprise, en adoptant l'approche événementielle. En outre, elle analyse l'effet sur la valeur boursière de l'action d'octrois des OAA aux dirigeants par les grandes et les petites entreprises. Notre échantillon est composé de 142 annonces d'octrois d'options d'achat d'actions faites par 81 entreprises canadiennes appartenant à dix industries, sur la période allant de 1998 jusqu'à 2003. Les résultats ont montré que l'octroi d'OAA aux dirigeants d'entreprise entraîne une augmentation du cours boursier, donc une augmentation de la richesse des actionnaires. De plus, cet accroissement est plus important pour les entreprises de grande taille. Ces résultats s'inscrivent dans le prolongement de la plupart des travaux relatifs à l'impact sur le marché boursier d'octrois de OAA aux dirigeants d'entreprise et sont cohérents avec l'interprétation de la théorie d'agence.
