Abstract
La croyance au Wendigo amérindien se retrouve chez les Algonquins du nord des États-Unis et du Canada, plus particulièrement chez les Ojibwé-Saulteaux et les Cris. Elle est également présente chez les Inuits. Outre la description d'un géant au coeur de glace, les récits rapportés mentionnent la possession d'un Amérindien par un esprit néfaste appelé Wendigo, ce qui risque de le mener au meurtre et au cannibalisme. Sa famille et son propre peuple seront ses premières victimes, d'où la méfiance qu'il suscite. La croyance en cette possession par l'esprit du Wendigo constitue le principal objet de notre recherche. Nous avons constitué un corpus de récits à partir de recherches et de témoignages compilés par des explorateurs et des anthropologues. Une approche thématique a été utilisée pour mettre en évidence diverses informations pertinentes. Parmi les principaux éléments récurrents, le cannibalisme et l'isolement se sont démarqués tout particulièrement. Nos principaux objectifs consistaient d'abord à approfondir nos connaissances sur ce phénomène tiré de la mémoire collective des communautés autochtones et à signaler un ou des nouveaux éléments permettant de plus amples investigations.
