Plusieurs études ont révélé que l'engagement affectif des employés en milieu de travail, surtout lorsque considéré sous l'angle des cibles face auxquelles un employé peut être engagé (organisation, collègues, superviseur, clients, travail, carrière, profession, tâches, syndicat et changement), permettait de prédire l'émergence de comportements efficaces au travail. Dans les écrits scientifiques, il est d'un côté possible de répertorier que l'engagement affectif envers diverses cibles améliore la performance au travail et diminue le stress des employés, et d'un autre côté qu'il est possible qu'un niveau très élevé d'engagement puisse néanmoins entraîner une hausse du risque d'épuisement professionnel. Une manière de concilier ces résultats contradictoires serait de postuler qu'il puisse exister une limite aux bénéfices de l'engagement en milieu de travail. La présente étude a pour but de vérifier cette possibilité en évaluant la nature linéaire ou curvilinéaire des relations entre les diverses cibles d'engagement affectif en milieu de travail et deux résultantes : la performance (attendue et les comportements de citoyenneté organisationnelle - CCO) et l'épuisement professionnel (épuisement émotionnel, cynisme et l'efficacité professionnelle). Au total, 273 employés d'un établissement de santé en soins de longue durée du Québec ont complété le questionnaire. Les résultats des analyses de régression ont effectivement montré l'existence de relations curvilinéaires entre des variables à l'étude. Ces résultats nous amènent donc à considérer sous un nouvel angle les bénéfices d'engagement affectif en milieu de travail.
