Une étude analytique par éléments discrets a été entreprise pour confirmer le rôle de la couche granulaire de base dans le processus de remontée des fissures en surface. La méthode des éléments discrets a permis de tenir compte de la discontinuité et de l'hétérogénéité des matériaux granulaires. L'analyse de deux structures de chaussées a montré une distribution non uniforme des contraintes sous le béton bitumineux ce qui se traduit par des contraintes qui contribuent à l'ouverture, la remontée et la propagation des fissures.Du fait que les mécanismes déterminés par cette étude ne sont pas pris en compte dans la pratique existante, cette étude a été étendue pour trouver une solution qui tient compte du rôle de la couche de fondation dans la propagation des fissures. Le traitement de la couche de fondation s'est avéré efficace. Il a permis d'éliminer ou de minimiser les contraintes observées. Ce traitement doit être effectué lors de la construction originale des chaussées.
