Abstract
La musica è, per eccellenza, un linguaggio astratto, in cui la dimensione dell'intangibile gioca una parte preminente, fin dalle più remote origini. Non sorprenderà come tutto ciò, interpretato in maniera eterodossa, diventi uno dei riferimenti per un composito e fortunato filone mistico-esoterico che vedrà nella musica, in chiave sostanzialmente gnostica, un mezzo di elevazione dall'umano al divino, e al contempo, attraverso i suoni, una rivelazione del divino stesso agli iniziati che sappiano decifrarne i messaggi. Durante gli anni del Simbolismo trionfante, quando si fondono richiami al mito classico, alla tradizione biblica e cristiana e a culture religiose extraeuropee, innestati sul tronco della teosofia e di dottrine affini e consimili, la musica è intesa anche come evocatrice della nostalgia per mondi misteriosi e perduti, strumento d'espressione degli aspetti più riposti dell'esistenza, delle forze ctonie, delle paure ancestrali, delle angosce indicibili. Una questione fondamentale, nella storia delle relazioni tra musica ed esoterismo durante il periodo compreso fra la stagione simbolista e l'età delle avanguardie, è quella della fusione delle arti in chiave mistica, di cui fu protagonista Aleksandr Skrjabin.
